Future Projects

1.) RYLA 2010: A place has been confirmed for this summer. A candidate has to be selected and details sent to Tim Dale by end April.

There appears to be some interest from Brooksbank students.

Vocational Visit - Next Step-the date will be finalized when the weather improves.

Date for the Diary

Coca Cola Canning Factory. Richard Garnett has provisionally arranged a date, Wednesday 15th September, combining the visit with a meal at the famous Wetherby Whaler at Wakefield. Full details nearer the event. It will be a great way to start the new rotary year

This hopefully is a good balance of service and fellowship, but as always it will only be successful if you, the members give your support.

Rough translation of the old proverb "the more you put in the more you get out

2010

New Year Projects:

1.) Mock Interviews: Edward Walker has done a great job organising this project and the club responded well with volunteers. The last set of interviews will take place on Wednesday 24th February. The school asked particularly that I pass on sincere thanks to all members who helped, the feedback from pupils was excellent and all felt it had been a very useful experience.

2.) Choir Festival. 26/03/10:  Unfortunately this has been cancelled due to lack of interest from schools, the date being unsuitable for most.

3.) Blood Pressure Day : Saturday 17th April. Michael Mallinson has agreed to organise the project and John Furness has agreed to give help and advise.

4.) Rex Cinema Outing: Tony reminded us that we are committed to helping Halifax R.C. with this once again in 2010. Tony C. is still awaiting confirmation of the date from Halifax Rotary

Pig Race. Brian Evans has to finalise the date, but it will probably be at the back end of April or early May.

An Afternoon at the Races. Peter Robertshaw and Michael Mallinson will organise a lunch and afternoon racing at Pontefract Greyhound Stadium. This will be a non profit fellowship event, fulfilling the much loved prophesy "that the Elland Rotary Club was going to the dogs". The date will be announced soon, it will be a Sunday in May/June.

Young Chef Hazel and Norman have met with Brooksbank School and arrangements have been made to stage a local competition.

Fellowship Events:

1.) Ten Pin Bowling in March: David seeking a volunteer to organise this.

2.) Theatre Visit: Northern Broadside " Medea" Viaduct Theatre Visit 3rd March. In the absence of John W. David P has purchased and distributed tickets. If you are not booked to watch the play, why not join us for a glass of wine in the convivial atmosphere of the theatre bar after the performance, which finishes at approx 9-30pm. Another chance for rotary fellowship.

3.) Sunday Lunch and Afternoon Greyhound Race Meeting:

Suggested we canvass members to see what interests there would be in doing this.

To finish the Rotary Year we will have a Crown Green Bowling Challenge

Elland Rotary Club Sleigh

Once again in 2009 Santa's Sleigh was a huge success with the children of Elland helping to raise £3100.

A big Thank You to all who helped and donated their time.

Rotarians meet Bill Gates at World Leaders Lunch

Allan Jagger President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, and Member of the Rotary $100 Million  Challenge Committee, met Bill Gates at the IoD World Leaders Lunch in London. Accompanied by Past Rotary International Director and Member of the Rotary $100 Million Challenge Committee Keith Barnard Jones and Judith Diment, Rotary's Public Relations Consultant, Allan took the opportunity to  thank Mr Gates on behalf of Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland for the donations from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the Rotary Polio Eradication programme.

The Rotary Foundation received a $100-million Gates Foundation grant in November 2007, which Rotary will raise funds to match, dollar-for-dollar, over three years. The Evanston-based volunteer service organization will spend the initial $100 million within one year in direct support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF.

"The extraordinary dedication of Rotary members has played a critical role in bringing polio to the brink of eradication," says Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "Eradicating polio will be one of the most significant public health accomplishments in history, and we are committed to helping reach that goal."

The polio eradication grant is one of the largest challenge grants ever given by the Gates Foundation and the largest grant received by Rotary in its 102-year history. Polio eradication has been Rotary's top priority since 1985. Since then, Rotary has contributed $633 million to the eradication effort.

Rotarians meet Bill GatesAt the World Leaders Lunch Bill Gates was interviewed about his leadership style, his rise at Microsoft from humble beginnings to the creation of one of the world's most successful organisations. He outlined his vision for future IT innovations   and also participated in a questions from the floor session with more than 1000 business people attending the event. He discussed his other passions such as his global health and education work and the relationship of philanthropy and business.

“Rotarians continue to be the heart and soul of the polio eradication effort,” said Ann M. Veneman, Executive Director of UNICEF. “In addition to their own record-breaking financial contribution for polio eradication and countless volunteer hours, Rotarians have helped leverage a further US$1.7 billion from governments for the cause.”

Rotary International is the world's first volunteer service organization with 1.2 million members in 200 countries and geographical areas. To date, over one million Rotary members have volunteered their time and personal resources to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries against polio. By the time the world is certified polio-free, Rotary’s contributions to the global polio eradication effort will exceed US$600 million.

In addition to raising and contributing funds, Rotary has provided an army of volunteers to promote and assist during national immunization campaigns. Rotary members assist with vaccine delivery, social mobilization, and administration of the oral polio vaccine to children.

Hurrah !       Santa Claus Came To (Elland) Town

- and to some Halifax and Brighouse Supermarkets !

The Rotary Club of Elland has repeated last year's very successful Christmas fund raising campaign, with its Santa Sleigh again touring the streets of Elland and District, and making full day visits to 5 Supermarkets in Halifax and Brighouse.  The illuminated Sleigh featured a Santa Claus plus Christmas Carols and other seasonal music.  Many local children were able to pass on their Christmas present wish list to Santa !

The first campaign, over Christmas 2005, helped raise £ 5000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The 2006 campaign raised an even more spectacular £ 6212, with all proceeds donated to the Elland Overgate Hospice.

The 2007 campaign raised £5,938 which was split between Glenholme Respite Centre, Forget Me Knot Trust and Shelter Box (Bangladesh) Appeal

The Rotary Club of Elland would like to record its sincere and heartfelt thanks to the people of Elland, Halifax and Brighouse for their continued generosity and support.

Our Christmas Sleigh raised £5,000 over the Christmas Period 2005,

Christmas period 2006 raised £6,212

Christmas Period 2007 raised £5,938

Christmas Period 2008 raised £5,130

Christmas Period 2009 raised £3,100

Thanks to Tesco's, Sainsbury's, and Asda for helping

The Sleigh was originally conceived and developed by Rotarian Arthur Walker of Stainland during 2005.  He bought a redundant caravan chassis, and enlisted the help of Rotarian Chris Marshall of Marshall’s Construction in Elland to build the superstructure.  The skills of other Rotarians were harnessed to install lighting and sound systems.

Arthur received a special award from the Rotary Club in recognition of his pioneering efforts, and the time he gave to collecting.

The completed Sleigh was first used during the build up to Christmas 2005, being stationed at Halifax and Brighouse Supermarkets during the day, and touring the streets of Elland in the early evenings.

With the generosity of the public, a total of £5,000 was raised at these Sleigh events.  This sum was supplemented by other fund raising efforts by the Rotary Club, resulting in a cheque for £ 6,600 being presented to Yorkshire Cancer Research in January 2006.
